T-shirt-maker Viagra has been struggling with rising prescription prices since its initial pill was pulled from the market in April. And now, it's getting back to its normal price range, at the same level it had been in before the drug's maker, Pfizer, pulled the pills from the market.
The generic version of Viagra, the drug that Pfizer launched in 2003, costs $1.41 a pill. It's the latest competitor to Pfizer's brand-name drug, sildenafil citrate, which is the generic version of Viagra.
Pfizer said its market share has dropped from 46% in the first half of this year to 32% in April, compared with the previous month. And as many as 30% of people in the United States who have had heart disease say they've sold the drugs, said Dr. Mark Zyprexa, Pfizer's medical director for pharmacy operations.
Pfizer is still trying to find a way to cut costs through other measures, he said. The company has been trying to work with drug makers to try to keep prices low but said the strategy hasn't worked, which isn't entirely accurate, he said.
"We've always been trying to be as conservative as possible in terms of going up or down from the average person to the average individual," said Zyprexa, who is a former director at Lilly's drug division.
But now, the drug has been struggling to keep its market share. The drug's maker, Eli Lilly & Co., has been raising prices even more, as its revenue has been hit by a generic version of its drug. And the company also is trying to get people to buy it.
"We are seeing a lot of people who are on Viagra who are in a lot of fear that they will go to hell," said Zyprexa, "and so we've got to be realistic in our attempts to reduce these costs."
But Pfizer said it is working with drug makers to try to lower prices and keep the average customer's health at a healthier level, by lowering the average monthly cost.
The company also is trying to keep some pharmacies open at all times. If it is successful, it would take about two years to complete the work that would have gone into keeping the prices low and keeping pharmacies open.
But the company said it has had to increase its efforts to cut costs, which are measures that Zyprexa said are part of its strategy to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.
"There are other strategies for lowering the cost of drugs like Viagra and Cialis, as well as other prescription drug programs," he said.
Pfizer said it is also trying to keep some pharmacies open at all times.
Last year, Pfizer said it has a program to try to lower its prescription drug bill through an online program that can also be purchased by consumers, which would require the company to make the program available to more than one million Americans.
"We believe that this program is great, but as you can see, it is a very different program from Pfizer's," said Zyprexa, who is a former director of Lilly's drug division.
Pfizer said that program was designed to help more than 1.4 million people who have high blood pressure, angina, heart disease, high blood pressure that is not controlled, or diabetes.

Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, was originally developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and is now approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men get an erection. Viagra can be taken with or without food, but a little bit of it can speed up the process, and it also gives you more flexibility in sexual activity.
Viagra is also approved for male sexual health, which is when a man takes the drug, and for females, which is when a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.

Buttig said this isn’t necessarily the case, and the research is still under way. “The reason that there’s a difference between these two medications is because the drug does have other effects,” he said. “It may have other effects, but we don’t know.”
The results are not good, but they may be a sign that the drug might be doing more for erectile dysfunction than for male sexual health. “The biggest difference between the two is that the two drugs may be different in terms of their side effects.”
Viagra is not a “standard” drug for treating erectile dysfunction. “What we are trying to do is look at the data,” said Hildegard Kocin, an assistant professor of pharmacy and clinical pharmacology at the University of Texas at Austin.
“It’s a good idea, and we are very hopeful that the results of this study will show a greater effect of Viagra on sexual function,” said Kocin.
The study also found that people taking 50 mg of Viagra had more spontaneous sexual events compared to those taking the standard drug.
Viagra was found to be associated with less sexual activity. A study published in 2015 found that the combination of a 50 mg dose of Viagra and a 50 mg dose of Sildenafil citrate led to an increase of 4.5 times in sexual activity.
